Unlike many sequels, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 did not disappoint its viewers.

For those who remember the first installment, protagonist Flint had created a machine called the Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator. The machine turned water vapor into food hoping to eliminate world hunger, but the food disastrously grew to enormous proportions, with a twist that creates an entire ecosystem of food animals.

The disaster forced Flint and his friends to leave their hometown. The world’s brightest inventors come together as they try to clear their beloved island. Chester sends Flint on a mission to clear the island of Swallow Falls, battle dangerous food creatures and save the world.

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 is a comedy. Some of the characters who bring an element of humor to this movie are Flint Lockwood, his fisherman father Tim and Earl the security guard. The fate of humanity is once again in the hands of this silly team.

A lot of the comedy is focused around various memorable food puns. Many jokes were made of their journey being “as easy as pie” or that there was “a leek in the boat” and so on.

Another humorous element of the movie is centered on Flint’s father, who has a side adventure that includes teaching pickled cucumbers how to fish for sardines. His eyebrows raise as he realizes the hilarity of the situation.

The movie also combined various food names with animal species. Some “foodimals” include Flamangos, Tacodiles and Cheese spiders.

I found myself falling in love with the cute food creatures, especially a mischievous baby strawberry, or a family of bouncing marshmallows. The animals are so cute you could almost eat them up.

Some people prefer movies to be one hit wonders, and do not wish to continue their plots. However, in this case, loose ends were left in the first movie, so I believe the second movie only benefited the first in finishing the food oriented adventure.

An interesting detail to notice is that the first movie focused more on unhealthy foods taking over, and so the problem got out of hand. The food disaster is resolved in the sequel where more healthy, vegetable type foods are presented.

It seems that there is an underlying message sent to show the benefits of a healthy lifestyle versus a junk food filled life. In the first Cloudy movie, Flint had problems relating to his father, and did not know how to act around a girl. In the second movie, he gets his life turned around and the gang lived happily ever after.

I believe the creators had a bit more fun in the making of the sequel than its predecessor. The vibrantly colored film is a bit more exaggerated than the first, and is targeted more toward a young audience.

The two movies are arguably not in sync with the book. They were originally based on the book by Judi Barrett. The titles are really the only similarity to be found, but I believe the book needed to be spiced up anyway.

I was surprised with how much I enjoyed Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2. I would give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars, only because the storyline could have been more complex. Overall, I loved this movie and cannot wait to see it again.
