Athletic Director Ira Childress is leaving Okemos at the end of the year to become the athletic director at Gulliver Prep, a private school just outside of Miami, FL. Childress made the announcement via Twitter on January 22.

“I think this opportunity, the timing of it right now is just really good for myself and my family. [I’m] looking forward to being in an international city like Miami,” Childress said. “Gulliver Prep is one of the best private schools in the country.”

In his six years at Okemos, Childress was critical in completing a number of big projects, such as the completion of a new turf field, a new track, a new strength and conditioning center, and new tennis courts. Childress created the Okemos Athletics Hall of Fame, and the Okemos Student Athlete Advisory Committee (OSAAC) as a place for student athletes to voice their input.

“ I wanted to have the student athlete voice be heard,” Childress said.
He also helped put on many events like basketball showcases, football camps and a “Career in Sports” night.

“What we’ve been able to accomplish in the last six years has been great,” Childress said. “Just getting the chance to work with some great student athletes, coaches and staff.”

In addition to what he’s been able to accomplish as an athletic director, Childress also broke barriers in the history of Okemos after his arrival in 2013.

“Something that’s really important to me is being the first African American administrator in the history of Okemos High School,” said Childress. “That’s not about me, that’s important to me, but that’s about the people that now feel like this is a place where minorities can go and be in leadership roles.”
Childress left an impact on students, but was also an inspiration to the staff. Christine Sermak describes his influence on the school itself.

“He [Childress] is really one of those transformational leaders. He’s someone who has done more than just your typical , I would say, athletic directors,” Sermak said. “He’s done just an amazing amount, I think he’s exceeded expectations.”

Prior to becoming the athletic director at Okemos Childress worked at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Headquarters in Indianapolis, and ran his own consulting firm to help student athletes.

A new athletic director is expected to be announced by the end of the year. The job will be posted in March with a candidate being approved by the school board in May. Students, faculty, coaches and boosters will be consulted during the search.
