With the start of the new school year comes the formation of the newest varsity sport: dance. While many details are still in the works, the new team is gearing up for the fall and winter seasons with plans to perform at pep rallies, football games and basketball games with later plans for the spring in the works.

Although the sport may seem new to OHS, it gained its inspiration from the school’s past roots.
Adam Lacasse (12) spoke of this inspiration for the renewed sport.
“Our instructor who put it all together was an Okemos alum…he was always on the dance team and noticed at football games [now], there’s no dance team. He wanted to bring that back,” Lacasse said.
After a few auditions earlier in the school year, the team found its place at Okemos with around a dozen members.

While the motivation for the sport is old, the ideas for what direction the team should move in are brand new. “There’s a lot of student-led choreography, too,” Lacasse said. “Any student who wants to put together choreography for the team can.”
By producing their own choreography, students are offered the opportunities for brief solos as well as leadership positions.

Most members of the team already have years of dance experience under their belts: Lacasse has been a dancer for nine years and competing for three. Even with the existing experience, members can still have a lot to learn about new styles of dance, with the varsity team intending on doing a combination of pom, jazz and hip hop dance styles. However, the latest addition to the OHS sports division seems ready to take on any challenges.
