Information for us high schoolers come from many sources: announcements, FLEX videos, emails, or posters on the bulletin board across from the office. However, parents receive a “News and Notes” email weekly, which could be filled with riveting and extremely important information that we don’t have access to.
Thankfully, we’re not missing much. Christine Sermak explains what goes into the notes.
“Information is submitted by faculty, booster groups, etc., and needs to be school related or school sponsored. We try to include information that is relevant to all families as they receive specific athletic, performance arts, etc. information from those groups,” Sermak said.
Dec. 24th’s News and Notes contained the following information:
- Yearbook prices are going up “soon” and senior ads are due March 12
- OHS Shoe Drive from 1/8 to 1/29. Donate gently used shoes for Soles4Souls in a box in the main office.
- The College Board is offering a ‘SAT Practice Award’ for students who complete 10 or more hours of Khan Academy Official SAT Practice and subsequently increase their scores by 150 points from PSAT to SAT or 100 points SAT to SAT.
In the past, the newsletter has contained new rules or reminders (don’t let your child carry their device in their backpack), but not much was new for the last week in December.
Mostly, though, Sermak prefers to inform students through in-school tactics and occasionally email.
“We use FLEX video announcements, video boards throughout school, [the] message board for student flyers, Twitter, Remind, club Facebook pages, etc. to communicate much of this information to students. We, at times, email students small blurbs of relevant information. We have found many students do not read their emails,” Sermak said.
