This year’s winter has been a rude awakening to some residents around Okemos. With temperatures far below normal, people have been seeking shelter anywhere heating was present. Temperatures have dropped into the negatives over these past few weeks while students were away for winter break. This frigid weather has some students wondering how to stay warm.

Emily Eddy (12) shares her thoughts on what to do when the weather is chilly.

“[You should] wear a coat, boots, and maybe a hat,” said Eddy.

With temperatures reaching six degrees below zero (without wind chill) it is important to stay safe from dangers like frostbite. However, high school students (known for their inability to follow rules) tend to pay more attention to fashion than the cold. Students have been spotted in flowy dresses, shorts and strangest of all, sandals.

“I feel like it’s freezing outside so I don’t think it’s a good choice,” said Aubrey Tucker (12).

This year’s winter weather has definitely been a shock to some. With the added danger of hypothermia increasing throughout the winter knowing how to dress warm through the polar vortex is one way to keep you safe and happy in this chilly weather.
