On May 12, Michigan State University hosted the Area 8 Special Olympics. The purpose of the Special Olympics is to allow students with disabilities to compete amongst each other in traditional events.

Last month, Keith Miller (Special Education) took his students to Ralph Young Field at Michigan State University.  This was his nineteenth year participating in the games. Miller finds this day to be rewarding for both the participants and volunteers.

“[The most beneficial part  for students is] by far interacting with their peers in general education and building relationships with their buddies,” Miller said.

Students participating in the games each have a “buddy” student who travels along with them throughout the day, cheering them on during their events.

“Most of the [students] will not remember what events they did, but they will remember who their buddy was and they’ll be super excited to say hi to them in the hallway. That’s what it’s all about, the relationships they build,” Miller said.

At this year’s Olympics, students competed in track and field events, such as sprints, long jump and a softball throw. Each student has a minimum of two events, allowing them to compete with students from all over the area.

“I always like watching the kids compete and when they’re running across the finish line and how animated and proud they are,” Miller said.

According to Miller, the students are filled with pride after completing a race, despite their place in the race.
