Six members of the orchestra have been selected to be members of the Michigan State Band and Orchestra Association(MSBOA) All-State Orchestra.

This skilled orchestra is comprised of the top musicians across the state. The orchestra’s one and and only performance is at the Michigan Music Conference(MMC) in Grand Rapids. MMC takes place in January and is an annual event that draws music directors from all over the state.

Auditions for All-State took place in October, and about two dozen musicians from Okemos auditioned this year. According to Orchestra Director Joel Schut, the auditions are blind, so the listening panel is able to judge audition tapes with no previous bias.

“You need to prepare a set number of scales, you need to prepare an orchestral excerpt, and then there’s a sight reading the students see once they arrive at the audition,” Joel Schut (Orchestra) said.

“I prepare for the audition by practicing everyday for three weeks leading up to it” Coulton Theuer(11) said.

All six of the musicians selected from Okemos have participated in All-State before, and there is consensus among the group why they re-audition each year.

“I always look forward to playing really good music with really good people,” Richard Liu(9) said.

Even though the All-State Orchestra is together for a short time, the musicians bond quickly and make life-long friends.

“I’ve got some friends there that I only see [during this time],” Nolan Feeny(12) said.

Below are the musicians that have been invited to play at the MMC in January.
