The change in leaves marks the start of many fall activities, such as football games and shopping for warm scarves and boots. Perhaps the biggest sign of fall these days is when local coffee shops unveil seasonal beverages and pastries.

“We offer Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Pumpkin Spice Frappuccinos and we can also make it iced on the rocks,” Lauren Bilardo, a Starbucks employee, said.

Starbucks also offers a variety of different fall treats to satisfy your cravings. Aside from the pumpkin spice, there are various different fall drinks available at this coffee shop. They include the Chai Tea Latte, Salted Caramel Mocha and the Caramel Apple Spice Frappuccino.

“The Pumpkin Spice Latte is my favorite. Starbucks makes it really good,” MacKenzie Hetfield (12) said. “My favorite place to go to during the fall is Starbucks. It is peaceful and quiet and I can study when I need to.”

According to Bilardo, Starbucks sometimes runs buy one get one free (BOGO) promotions on seasonal drinks and pastries and items. For a full list of discounted products and the dates of these specials, go to Starbucks.com.

Another hot spot in town is Grand Traverse Pie Company. Grand Traverse offers great deals this season and is the perfect spot to enjoy a refreshing breakfast, lunch or dinner with a tasty dessert to go along. The store sells items varying from pies to deli sandwiches and salad wraps, and has opened its menu up to cater to specific dietary needs.

“We have new gluten free stuff like the cowboy cookie, the gluten free muffin, the gluten free brownies and the pie shakes,” Laura Ossere, a Grand Traverse employee, said.

According to Ossere, pie shakes are slices of pie topped with two scoops of dairy store ice cream. Grand Traverse always has upcoming specials such as free soups and free slices of pie.

In addition to Starbucks and Grand Traverse Pie Company, other area coffee shops such as Biggby Coffee and Panera Bread often offer seasonal drinks and foods.

“Hot chocolate from Biggby Coffee is one of my favorite fall drinks, and the bear claw from Panera Bread, which is coated in brown sugar and almonds, is really good,” Ramya Mohankumar (12) said.
